Opening of the new Swiss & Austrian Social Club House on 11 June 2010

The new club house opened on 11 June 2010, the same day the soccer world cup started.

Update 28 May 2010

Dear Members

We are looking forward to the opening of the Swiss Club, right in time for the start of the soccer world cup. We might not have finished all the work, but we will certainly be in a position to show the games on a big screen!
On 14 May Rade Boskovic, project manager for the City of Cape Town did a ceremonial handing over of the keys. From this date we now could go in with our own workers to install the acoustic ceilings, the bar, kitchen etc.
The Swiss-Austrian house committee is doing a sterling job in supervising the renovation, ordering curtains, sound system, the entire kitchen, the list goes on and on… without them we would certainly not be in a position to open the club in time for the soccer!
A big thank you to Jan Klingler our Architect, who is attending to most correspondence and meetings with the City to ensure the City delivers on the promises made and that the quality meets our expectation!.
Kind regards, Michael Hauser

Update 2 October 2009

Building sub-committee has been meeting regularly with City council. Plans were discussed and our requirements presented. Final drawings will be received within 3wks, which will then go to a public tender. Renovations to be completed by end March 2010. Stadium operator Stade de France will contact MH to discuss the opening between club and urban park.

Update 20 February 2009

Our belongings have been stored, awaiting our new facility, and the old club house is partially demolished.

Update 13 January 2009

This is the latest update from the City Council Project Manager

  • The containers are still being sourced by the stadium contractor, I have been following up in order to expedite their delivery, I should know some time soon when they shall be placed. You shall be notified prior to the containers being placed in position
  • Your caretaker currently has the keys for Metro B, the Common contractor has been appointed and they shall undertake the repair work under their contract, these details are being finalised within the next few weeks.
  • The Common contractor shall undertake the works for your building, council is to make a decision regarding the finer details of lease agreements, the way forward, etc. once this has been determined in early February, this will then determine the scope of the works and construction programme.
  • The demolition of the old clubhouse will occur as soon as we have repaired Metro B for your caretaker and the containers have been placed in position, with a lag of a few days in order for you to be able to move all the possessions.

Update 3 December 2008

We have just received good news from the City Council that they have approved our request for a new caretaker’s home at the new premises. John will be able to move to an apartment which will be close to our new building.
The contents and the furniture of our building will be stored at a container near our new building. We still have to negotiate the finer details / renovations of the new premises. If everything goes according to plans, we should be able to take occupation of the new club by March / April 09.
In the meantime we may use the facilities of the Metropolitan Golf Club. The first event we have planned will be a “New Years”-Brunch to be held on 25 January. Thereafter we will meet on a weekly basis. Most likely it will be on Wednesday evenings. Please have a look on our website and look out for the e-mails with information. We have invited the Austrian Club members to join us on these evenings.
Regarding the Tennis Club, we have separate negotiations. It looks like that the Tennis Club will join the Tamboerskloof Tennis Club, as the facilities on the Green Point Common will only be ready in a year or so.

Update 1 November 2008

The last function in the old Club House will be the Uustrinkete on 8 November, starting 14:00. So please join us for a party in celebration of the good times we had and look forward to the new Club House. Aftre that the Club House will have to make way to the new urban planning of the Greenpoint soccer stadiu

Update 12 October 2008

Last week we had a meeting with the City of Cape Town. We are currently negotiating the details of the new club building. It seems that we might be able to move into the new premises towards the end of the year! Once the lease has been negotiated, the City will have to advertise our new premises in the Government Gazette and can start the renovations within 30 days of no objections. Please support the current club, we might still be open until about mid November!

Update 15 July 2008

During July we have received the written notification from the City of Cape Town to vacate our clubhouse by end of September. Work on the Common will start on 1 October.
The committee has now written a response with our request for a new clubhouse and some other conditions. It seems it will take a couple of weeks / months to negotiate the lease conditions for the new clubhouse. The City Council will not be in a position to immediately sign a long lease, as this will have to be advertised to the public. The City plans to do some minor renovations to our possible new clubhouse next to the police station in Green Point and then offer us a one year lease until the long lease has been approved.

Update during 85th AGM, 18 March 2008

During the 85th AGM a PowerPoint presentation about the current status of the project was given by a representative of the City council. According to this, the Site Development Plan has now been reworked into Plan C which is a compromise between Plan A and Plan B. A new possibility is now for the Swiss Club to move into a building next to the Sea Point police station, behind the Shell garage at Three Anchor Bay. The committee will meet with the council to assess the situation.

Update from Dave Hugo, City of Cape Town, 21 January 2008

As you may be aware the Minister has rejected the submitted site development plan requesting that we, inter ali, investigate the consolidation of sporting codes, the reduction of the golf course par rating, the relocation of the athletics track and the reconfiguration of the proposed tennis precinct. We are currently working on modifications of the site development plan and will certainly be in a position to advise your members of revisions by the 18th of March.
Regards, Dave Hugo

Meeting with City council, 17 May 2007

The city council offers new premises that will be built between the Western Blvd and Main Road, close to the robot at Three Anchor Bay. The Swiss Club will share the premises with the Lions club, and probably others. An advantage is that construction of the new premises could basically start anytime and it is well away from the busy main construction site of the soccer stadium. Financials or a time frame were not discussed during the meeting. The committee members present at the meeting accepted this new proposal by the city council. One condition of the agreement should be a safe pedestrian crossing across Western Blvd to the rest of the Green Point commons area, where also the tennis club will be located. Ample parking will be made available.

This is how it looked, our good old club house in Green Point, before it had to make way for the development around the new soccer stadium for the 2010 World Cup.
